Blog moving...and Gender Variants

Hopefully, in a few days this blog will be moving to my new site - http://www.kimewilliams.com.

In the mean time I have been wondering about some gender issues. I have noticed - with all due reverence and distance - an interesting discussion over at Simmonne's about 'bums' - butts. The discussion has been mainly among women and has been a delightful, if playful, affirmation of physical attributes. It is lovely, actually, that these ladies are so supportive, complimentary and encouraging of each other's appearance.

Which got me to wondering if men would be similarly impassioned to each other. The following is the imagined conversation that went on in my head:

Me: Hey, Dave... I was reading this woman's blog about liking her own butt, and how interesting it was that the ladies that comment were celebrating their favorite's among their own and each others body parts. Do you have a favorite physical attribute?

Dave: Dude. You're gay. I got your body part right here! Hey - where was that site? Do they post pictures?

Yep. What was I thinking?

We say bums in New England and butts in the south. I don't tend to blog about mine. But I do enjoy knowing that others do. Netchick says hi.

The pressure to comment is akin to being asked, while listening to All Things Considered, to contribute to my favorite NPR station, so... I read Simmonne's piece and Queen's Fat Bottom Girls kept coming to mind. But I especially liked your careful addition of "with all due reverence and distance." Good call.

Your imagined conversation played out almost exactly the way I would have written it, if pressed. (Although I'm glad a "dude" wrote it, instead of me.) :)

Here's to recognizing and acknowledging gender differences...and enjoying them!

That's too funny, that's exactly how the conversation would go. I have to admit a bum vs. butt discussion is always a good read. 'Course we say butts down here in the South.

I'm with out, I doubt that men will ever be as supportive as women are where their appearance goes. Thanks for the giggle. Your new blog is fantastic!
